4 Key Metrics for Measuring the Health of Your Open Source Project

Although popularity measurements of your open source project “might be interesting and exciting, they don’t often provide any real insight into project health or indicate areas of improvement,” says Dawn Foster.

A better approach, Foster explains, is to look at specific health metrics for your project. To help do that, Foster has created a Starter Project Health Metrics Model using four simple yet important metrics:

  • Contributor data
  • Responsiveness
  • Release frequency
  • Change request closure ratio

“This model and the metrics contained in it are defined within CHAOSS, an Open Source project focused on understanding Open Source community health on a global scale,” Foster says.
