Apple Shares Open Source Password Manager Resources

Apple has created a new open source project to help developers of password managers collaborate and take advantage of shared resources to create strong passwords.

According to the announcement, the Password Manager Resources lets developers “integrate website-specific requirements used by the iCloud Keychain password manager to generate strong, unique passwords.” The shared resources consist of data, code, and what the project page on GitHub calls quirks, which refer to “website-specific, hard-coded behavior to work around an issue with at website that can't be fixed in a principled, universal way,” such as password rules, shared credential back ends, and URLs for changing passwords.

The project page also details the high-level benefits of this type of open collaboration and public documentation, including improved quality with less work.
