GitHub Expands Open Source Archive Program

The GitHub Archive Program, which aims to preserve historically relevant open source software for future generations, is expanding its efforts beyond the Arctic Code Vault.

The program will store copies of 17,000 of GitHub’s most popular open source repositories at four locations:

  • The 400-year-old Bodleian Library at Oxford University in England
  • The Bibliotheca Alexandrina in Alexandria, Egypt
  • The Stanford Libraries in California
  • The library at GitHub’s headquarters in San Francisco

The code repositories will be transferred to digital photosensitive archival film and housed in museum-quality cases. GitHub’s approach of archiving the software across multiple sites and in various storage formats is aimed at ensuring long-term preservation and avoiding loss in the event of catastrophe.
