Google Season of Docs Is Underway

Google Season of Docs 2020 is underway. If you’re a technical writer interested in contributing to open source, now’s the time to learn more about Google Season of Docs. The initiative, which officially launched in March, is now in its second year, and its aim is to “provide a framework for technical writers and open source projects to work together towards the common goal of improving an open source project's documentation.”

During the technical writer exploration phase, which runs from May 11 to June 8, 2020 technical writers can explore the list of participating organizations and their project ideas. If you find a project that interests you, the website recommends approaching the relevant open source organization directly to discuss project ideas. In this article, Swati Thacker, shares important information and tips to help you be prepared to apply and participate, recommending, for example, that you focus on organizations close to your domain knowledge and submit project proposals for two or three organizations. Thacker also says initiating interaction with the organization mentors is useful both for establishing rapport and for gathering information that can help you fine-tune your proposal.

The Season of Docs website also provides an overview of the workflow and a timeline with key dates and details. Note that the technical writer application phase runs from June 9, 2020 to July 9, 2020. During this period, you can apply to participate; also note that you must meet the program’s eligibility requirements (detailed on the site) in order to take part in Season of Docs. You can see the full technical writer terms here.
