The proposed U.N. Cybercrime Treaty has the potential to rewrite criminal laws around the world and affect individuals’ right to privacy, say Paige Collings and Katitza Rodriguez. The proposed agreement could add more than “30 criminal offenses and new expansive police powers for both domestic and international criminal investigations.”
Additionally, “these widened parameters amplify the potential implications for billions of people — particularly stifling free speech, increasing government surveillance, and expanding state investigative techniques,” the authors say.
