7 Considerations for Open Source Community Development

In a recent Red Hat article, Dave Neary presented a list of practical questions to help guide open source project community development, including:

  • What is the project?
  • Who are its users?
  • How do you engage with your user base today?
  • What are your goals for the project?

However, Neary also provides insight to help you arrive at the most useful answers, with the aim of producing a baseline document for use in strategic planning. 

Ultimately, Neary says, “understanding your reasons for open sourcing the project will help you clarify the investment required to achieve your goal, and will help you stay aligned across engineering, product, and sales teams down the road.”

And, he says, after answering the questions in this exercise, you should fully understand what problems your project solves and for whom.
